PVC HoleDidge tutorial

Thanks to Cloudwalk7 for the kind english translation of this tutorial.

First, gather the materials

• PVC tube 1.5m long and 3cm (30mm) wide

• 2- 45 ° elbow PVC joint (female-female)

• 2- 45 ° elbow PVC joint (female-male)

• appropriate PVC glue • a hacksaw

• sandpaper (course and fine)

• a drill

• a tape measure (units are in cm)

• a electronic tuner

Cut the tubing

PVC pipe 1.5m, using hacksaw.

Cut your pipe into three pieces of unequal size. In this example, the pieces are respectively 63, 49 and 29 cm. (After tuning, thus excluding offcuts)

Prepare the mouthpiece

Take the longest PVC tubes that you just cut. Sand the ends of your choice first with coarse sandpaper and then with fine grain to remove the sharp edges for a comfortable mouthpiece.

Assemble the parts

3 PVC pipes, fittings elbow 2 males, 2 females elbows.

The following diagram shows against how to assemble the parts. Make sure your connections are tight. You can use tape to seal the seams before glueing.

Molding the instrument

Use PVC-compatible glue

Place the instrument flat facing you. While holding the two longer sides, bring the shorter upward. You get a triangular arrangement. Adjust the position to make it comfortable to hold in playing position.

Master tune

Hack saw

It's time to make the first tune your didgeridoo. Try it. The sound must be very serious, slow and soft. If you cut a few centimeters off of the output ("Bell") of your didgeridoo, the note will be more acute. Use an electronic tuner and a hacksaw to get the right note for you. Do not cut off too much!

Identify holes

Use a pencil

Place your hand on the didgeridoo as shown in the picture. Make sure you have your fingers wide apart while being in a comfortable position: this will be your home position! For a right-handed HoleDidg (remember to reverse the instructions for a lefty)

For the right hand: Put a hole under the little finger, index finger, and under the thumb (at the PVC elbow).

For the left hand: at least one hole for the index finger.

Go slow. Do not drill suddenly!

Drill

Make each hole individually, starting with the one closest to the exit of the didgeridoo (the ‘bell’), the more "serious" one. After each hole, it is necessary to check the sound before moving to the next hole. Otherwise you may detune the instrument. Drill the holes and then advance one by one up to the most "acute" holes: the closer to the mouth.

Read the next step before drilling!

Carefully drill each hole

Drill

Tuning the holes is not complicated once you understand the mechanism. If you drill the hole ‘upstream’ (nearer the mouthpiece), you will create a slightly sharper note.

Have fun !

Enjoy, your instrument is finished !
